The print medium has thrived for centuries by providing a visual storytelling outlet to its viewers. The word “viewers” is important, as the consumers for print medium see to understand the story a journalist is telling them. The journalist’s responsibility is to use every tool possible to help their readers understand the story as much as possible.
One tool that is often overlooked is the use of images to enhance the story. In sports journalism especially, these images can allow the reader to actually understand an aspect of the story they would not normally get.
The Emotional Moments
Sports are filled with moments that will make players and fans laugh, cry, and fuel enough rage to smash their TV. Many of these moments would not be properly captured if not for photographs. Iconic sports moments such as Tiger Woods’ fourth Masters win, Michael Jordan’s Father’s day Finals win, or Muhammad Ali’s victory over Sonny Liston would not be remembered the way they are without a visual representation.
To fans that were not at the game, the emotion of the moment is forever immortalized by a visual. For fans that were at the game, they can still remember exactly how thy felt in the stadium when they see a picture.
Impressive Plays
Journalists can be incredibly descriptive, but sometimes it can hard to describe to a reader a play that they did not see. Sometimes an image tells the story better than words could.
